Day 1: Trek to Sembalun Crater Rim
Your Mount Rinjani adventure begins in Sembalun Village (1,060m), the main starting point for the summit route. After registration at the national park gate and a short briefing from your guide, the trek starts across the wide Sembalun savannah, offering beautiful open views of the surrounding hills.
The trail gradually climbs through grasslands and gentle slopes during the first part of the hike, making it a pleasant introduction to the journey. Along the way, you will pass several rest posts where you can relax, enjoy snacks, and take in the scenic landscape.
After lunch at Pos 3 (1,800m), the trail becomes steeper as you continue toward the Sembalun Crater Rim campsite (2,620m). This final section requires a bit more effort, but the reward is spectacular. Once you reach the crater rim, you’ll be greeted with breathtaking views of Lake Segara Anak, the active volcano inside the crater, and the summit of Mount Rinjani towering above.
In the evening, enjoy a freshly prepared dinner while watching the sunset over Lombok Island. Spend the night camping at the crater rim, surrounded by incredible mountain scenery and a sky full of stars.

Day 2: Summit Push, Segara Anak Lake & Senaru Crater Rim
Day 2 is the highlight of the Rinjani trek and also the most physically demanding. You’ll travel through several very different landscapes in a single day — from the high summit ridge to the crater lake far below, and finally up to the dramatic Senaru crater rim.
The day starts in the middle of the night at the Sembalun Crater Rim campsite. After a quick hot drink and light breakfast prepared by your trekking team, you’ll begin the climb toward the summit under the stars. The trail becomes steeper and sandier as you approach the top, making the final section slow but incredibly exciting.
Reaching the summit of Mount Rinjani (3,726 m) just before sunrise is an unforgettable moment. From the highest point on Lombok, you can see a vast panorama stretching across Lombok Island, Bali, Sumbawa, and the huge volcanic crater below with its deep-blue Segara Anak Lake.
After spending time at the summit for photos and rest, you’ll descend carefully back to the Sembalun crater rim where breakfast is waiting at camp. Once re-energized, the trek continues down into the crater. The trail winds along the volcanic slopes for several hours before reaching the peaceful shores of Segara Anak Lake.
At the lake, you’ll have time to relax and enjoy lunch prepared by the porters. A short walk from the lake brings you to the natural hot springs, where many trekkers enjoy soaking their tired muscles after the long summit climb.
In the afternoon, the journey continues with another steady climb up to Senaru Crater Rim (2,641 m). This campsite offers one of the most spectacular viewpoints on Mount Rinjani, overlooking the entire crater, Segara Anak Lake, and the forested valleys of northern Lombok. On clear evenings, the sunset often reveals the silhouette of Mount Agung in Bali on the horizon.
For trekkers who prefer to spend more time at the lake, camping at Segara Anak is also possible. However, this option makes the final day longer, with a later descent to Senaru village. Your guide can help adjust the plan depending on the group’s energy and preference.

Day 3: Senaru Crater Rim to Senaru Village
Your final day on the mountain begins at the beautiful Senaru Crater Rim (2,620m), where you’ll wake up to fresh mountain air and the last stunning views of Mount Rinjani. After breakfast at the campsite, it’s time to begin the descent toward Senaru Village (600m).
Today’s trek covers approximately 10.5 km, descending about 2,020 meters through dense tropical rainforest. Compared to the previous days, this section of the trail feels calmer and cooler thanks to the shaded forest canopy. The path winds through lush greenery, creating a peaceful atmosphere as you gradually make your way down the mountain.
Along the route, you’ll take several rest stops to relax, hydrate, and enjoy the surrounding nature. This part of the national park is home to wildlife, and you may spot monkeys near some rest areas. For safety and conservation reasons, please remember not to feed or approach them.
Reaching Senaru Village marks the end of your Mount Rinjani trekking adventure — a moment to reflect on the incredible landscapes, the challenging summit climb, and the unforgettable experience on one of Indonesia’s most spectacular volcanoes.

Footwear
Trekking Shoes or Boots
Wear sturdy trekking shoes or boots with good grip. Make sure they are already broken in, as the trail includes rocky paths and loose volcanic sand.
Clothing
Warm Jacket
Bring a warm jacket or down jacket. Temperatures during the night and early morning can drop to around 0–5°C, especially during the summit climb.
Thermal Base Layers
Thermal tops and bottoms are recommended for sleeping and for the early morning summit trek.
Trekking Pants
Pack at least one pair of comfortable, quick-dry trekking pants suitable for long hikes.
Lightweight Pants or Shorts
For warmer sections of the trail, lightweight pants or shorts can be more comfortable.
Moisture-Wicking T-Shirts
Quick-dry shirts help keep you comfortable while hiking during the day.
Essential Accessories
Warm Hat and Gloves
Important for staying warm during the cold summit push.
Sun Protection
Bring a sun hat, cap, or buff to protect yourself from strong sun and dusty trails.
Rain Jacket or Poncho
Weather in the mountains can change quickly, so waterproof protection is essential.

Mount Rinjani Trekking Travel Insurance
Mount Rinjani Trekking Travel Insurance
Travel Insurance for Mount Rinjani Trekkers
Before starting a trek to Mount Rinjani, it is highly recommended that all hikers have valid travel insurance. Trekking takes place in a remote mountain environment where weather conditions, altitude, and terrain can present certain risks. Having proper insurance ensures that you are protected in case of accidents or medical emergencies during your adventure.
Your insurance policy should ideally cover medical expenses, emergency rescue, and helicopter evacuation if needed. Because Mount Rinjani’s summit reaches 3,726 meters above sea level, it is important to confirm that your insurance covers trekking activities at high altitude (above 3,500 meters). Many standard travel insurance policies do not automatically include this type of coverage.
In serious situations where hikers cannot descend safely, helicopter evacuation may be required to transport the patient to the nearest hospital. For this reason, it is essential to choose an insurance plan that includes emergency air evacuation.
Mount Rinjani Insurance Update
Optional Premium Trekking Insurance
The Mount Rinjani National Park Authority has introduced a new optional program called Premium Trekking Insurance. This program is designed to improve safety and emergency response capabilities for hikers exploring Mount Rinjani.
While all trekking permits already include basic insurance coverage, the Premium Trekking Insurance provides additional protection and expanded emergency assistance for trekkers who want extra security during their hike.
This insurance option is available for both Indonesian citizens (WNI) and international visitors (WNA).
What Does the Premium Insurance Cover?
The Premium Trekking Insurance is designed to assist hikers if an accident or medical emergency occurs during the trek. Coverage includes:
- Protection in case of trekking accidents
- Medical treatment related to trekking incidents
- Ground evacuation and ambulance services
- Emergency rescue operations carried out by rescue teams
- Helicopter evacuation with hoist support in serious situations
This additional coverage helps ensure that hikers receive professional assistance quickly in case of an emergency on the mountain.
Premium Insurance Cost
The cost of the Premium Trekking Insurance is:
IDR 290,000 per person per trekking trip
Insurance coverage begins when hikers enter the official trekking entrance gate and remains valid until they exit the national park.
The maximum coverage period is 4 days (4 × 24 hours).
Do You Need to Purchase This Insurance?
Purchasing the Premium Trekking Insurance is optional, but it is strongly recommended for hikers who do not already have suitable travel insurance.
You may want to consider purchasing the insurance if:
- You are traveling without personal travel insurance
- Your insurance does not include trekking or mountain activities
- Your policy does not cover emergency evacuation
- Your insurance does not include high-altitude trekking coverage
Because Mount Rinjani is a remote mountain with challenging terrain, having proper insurance can make a significant difference during emergencies. The Premium Trekking Insurance provides an additional layer of safety and support for hikers during their adventure.
Using Your Own Travel Insurance
Trekkers who already hold a personal travel insurance policy that includes coverage for mountain trekking activities do not need to purchase the optional Premium Trekking Insurance provided by the Mount Rinjani National Park.
Even so, the park management requires every hiker to register their insurance information before beginning the trek. This procedure ensures that all visitors on the mountain have confirmed insurance coverage in case an accident or medical emergency occurs.
If you already have your own travel insurance, you only need to submit the following details during the booking or registration process:
- Name of the insurance provider
- Policy or certificate number
These details will be recorded together with your trekking permit as part of the official registration system for Mount Rinjani.
