A Complete Mount Rinjani Adventure at a Comfortable Pace

Mount Rinjani 4 Days 3 Nights Summit Trek

The Mount Rinjani 4 Days 3 Nights Summit Trek is designed for travelers who want to experience the full beauty of the mountain without rushing the journey. With an extra day on the trail, this program allows trekkers to enjoy the landscape, rest properly, and explore the most famous highlights of Rinjani.

This itinerary is ideal for fit beginners, families, and adventure travelers who want to reach the summit while still having enough time to appreciate the natural surroundings. Compared to shorter programs, the four-day trek provides a more relaxed pace and a deeper experience of the mountain.

Trekking Route: Sembalun to Senaru

The trek begins in Sembalun Village, located on the eastern side of Mount Rinjani. From here, hikers walk across the wide savanna fields that dominate the lower slopes of the mountain. The open landscape offers beautiful panoramic views and a gradual climb toward the crater rim.

After reaching the Sembalun Crater Rim, trekkers can enjoy spectacular sunset views overlooking the Segara Anak Lake and the volcanic cone of Mount Barujari.

The journey then continues down into the crater toward the stunning Segara Anak Lake, where trekkers usually spend time exploring the area and relaxing in the nearby natural hot springs. The warm mineral water is a perfect place to recover after the summit climb.

From the lake, the route climbs up to the Senaru Crater Rim, one of the most scenic viewpoints on Mount Rinjani. The final day of the trek takes hikers down through dense tropical rainforest, ending in the traditional mountain village of Senaru.

Mount Rinjani Summit Experience

Standing at 3,726 meters above sea level, Mount Rinjani is the second-highest volcano in Indonesia and one of the most spectacular trekking destinations in Southeast Asia.

The summit push usually begins in the early morning hours, allowing trekkers to reach the top in time for sunrise. From the summit, hikers are rewarded with breathtaking views across Lombok Island, and on clear days even Bali and Sumbawa can be seen in the distance.

Watching the sunrise from the summit of Rinjani is often the most memorable moment of the entire journey.

Day 1: Trek to Sembalun Crater Rim

Your Mount Rinjani adventure begins in Sembalun Village, located at about 1,060 meters above sea level. From the trekking gate, the trail leads across wide savannah landscapes and gently rising hills, offering beautiful views of the surrounding valleys and Mount Rinjani’s towering slopes.

The first section of the hike is a gradual ascent through open grassland, allowing trekkers to warm up while enjoying the scenery. As the day progresses, the trail becomes steeper, especially during the final stretch leading up to the Sembalun Crater Rim campsite, which sits at approximately 2,620 meters.

In total, the trek covers around 9.6 kilometers, with an elevation gain of about 1,560 meters. The final climb requires determination, but the effort is rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of Segara Anak Lake, the volcanic crater, and the surrounding mountains.

Upon reaching the crater rim, your guide and porters will prepare the campsite while you relax and take in one of the most spectacular sunset views on Mount Rinjani. As night falls, enjoy a warm dinner and a peaceful evening beneath a sky filled with stars, preparing for the next day’s adventure.

Trekkers can enjoy the calm atmosphere, take photos around the lake, or walk to the nearby natural hot springs, where warm mineral water offers a relaxing soak for tired muscles.

Start the day with a calm morning by the lakeside. You can take a short walk along the shore, enjoy the fresh mountain air, revisit the nearby hot springs, or simply relax while taking in the stunning scenery surrounding the lake. Many trekkers also enjoy a refreshing swim in the clear waters of Segara Anak.

Around midday, your trekking team will prepare a hearty lunch at the lakeside camp to refuel your energy for the afternoon hike.

In the early afternoon, the journey continues with a steady climb from the lake up to the Senaru Crater Rim (2,641m). This scenic ascent rewards you with incredible views back over the lake, the volcanic landscape, and the lush valleys of Lombok.

After several hours of trekking, you’ll arrive at the Senaru Crater Rim, where camp will be set up for the night. From this viewpoint, you can enjoy a breathtaking sunset, often with a clear view stretching all the way to Mount Agung in Bali. It’s the perfect place to relax, take photos, and reflect on the adventure so far.

As the sun rises over the mountains, enjoy a warm breakfast while taking in the last panoramic views of the crater, Segara Anak Lake, and the surrounding landscape. It’s a perfect moment to reflect on the incredible journey you’ve completed over the past few days.

After breakfast, the trek continues with a gradual descent through the lush tropical rainforest that covers the slopes of Rinjani. The trail winds down through shaded forest paths, where the air becomes warmer and more humid as you lose elevation. Along the way, your guide will schedule several rest stops so you can relax, rehydrate, and enjoy lunch surrounded by nature.

This forest area is home to various wildlife species, and with a bit of luck you may encounter the island’s famous black monkeys (Ebony Leaf Monkeys) moving through the trees. While they can be curious, it’s important to observe them from a distance and avoid feeding them.

By early afternoon, you will arrive back in Senaru Village, marking the end of your Rinjani trekking adventure. Once in the village, you will stop at the Jou Trekking office to collect your stored luggage and enjoy some well-deserved refreshments after the long journey.

Essential Packing List for Your Trek

Preparing well for your trek is important, as conditions on the mountain can change quickly. Having the right gear will keep you comfortable, safe, and ready to enjoy the adventure. Below are the essential items we recommend bringing.

Footwear

Trekking Shoes or Boots
Wear sturdy trekking shoes or boots with good grip. Make sure they are already broken in, as the trail includes rocky paths and loose volcanic sand.

Clothing

Warm Jacket
Bring a warm jacket or down jacket. Temperatures during the night and early morning can drop to around 0–5°C, especially during the summit climb.

Thermal Base Layers
Thermal tops and bottoms are recommended for sleeping and for the early morning summit trek.

Trekking Pants
Pack at least one pair of comfortable, quick-dry trekking pants suitable for long hikes.

Lightweight Pants or Shorts
For warmer sections of the trail, lightweight pants or shorts can be more comfortable.

Moisture-Wicking T-Shirts
Quick-dry shirts help keep you comfortable while hiking during the day.

Essential Accessories

Warm Hat and Gloves
Important for staying warm during the cold summit push.

Sun Protection
Bring a sun hat, cap, or buff to protect yourself from strong sun and dusty trails.

Rain Jacket or Poncho
Weather in the mountains can change quickly, so waterproof protection is essential.

Extra Socks

Bring several pairs of moisture-wicking socks. Dry feet are key to staying comfortable and preventing blisters during the trek.

Mount Rinjani Trekking Travel Insurance

Travel Insurance for Mount Rinjani Trekkers

Before starting a trek to Mount Rinjani, it is highly recommended that all hikers have valid travel insurance. Trekking takes place in a remote mountain environment where weather conditions, altitude, and terrain can present certain risks. Having proper insurance ensures that you are protected in case of accidents or medical emergencies during your adventure.

Your insurance policy should ideally cover medical expenses, emergency rescue, and helicopter evacuation if needed. Because Mount Rinjani’s summit reaches 3,726 meters above sea level, it is important to confirm that your insurance covers trekking activities at high altitude (above 3,500 meters). Many standard travel insurance policies do not automatically include this type of coverage.

In serious situations where hikers cannot descend safely, helicopter evacuation may be required to transport the patient to the nearest hospital. For this reason, it is essential to choose an insurance plan that includes emergency air evacuation.

Mount Rinjani Insurance Update

Optional Premium Trekking Insurance

The Mount Rinjani National Park Authority has introduced a new optional program called Premium Trekking Insurance. This program is designed to improve safety and emergency response capabilities for hikers exploring Mount Rinjani.

While all trekking permits already include basic insurance coverage, the Premium Trekking Insurance provides additional protection and expanded emergency assistance for trekkers who want extra security during their hike.

This insurance option is available for both Indonesian citizens (WNI) and international visitors (WNA).

What Does the Premium Insurance Cover?

The Premium Trekking Insurance is designed to assist hikers if an accident or medical emergency occurs during the trek. Coverage includes:

  • Protection in case of trekking accidents
  • Medical treatment related to trekking incidents
  • Ground evacuation and ambulance services
  • Emergency rescue operations carried out by rescue teams
  • Helicopter evacuation with hoist support in serious situations

This additional coverage helps ensure that hikers receive professional assistance quickly in case of an emergency on the mountain.

Premium Insurance Cost

The cost of the Premium Trekking Insurance is:

IDR 290,000 per person per trekking trip

Insurance coverage begins when hikers enter the official trekking entrance gate and remains valid until they exit the national park.

The maximum coverage period is 4 days (4 × 24 hours).

Do You Need to Purchase This Insurance?

Purchasing the Premium Trekking Insurance is optional, but it is strongly recommended for hikers who do not already have suitable travel insurance.

You may want to consider purchasing the insurance if:

  • You are traveling without personal travel insurance
  • Your insurance does not include trekking or mountain activities
  • Your policy does not cover emergency evacuation
  • Your insurance does not include high-altitude trekking coverage

Because Mount Rinjani is a remote mountain with challenging terrain, having proper insurance can make a significant difference during emergencies. The Premium Trekking Insurance provides an additional layer of safety and support for hikers during their adventure.

Using Your Own Travel Insurance

Trekkers who already hold a personal travel insurance policy that includes coverage for mountain trekking activities do not need to purchase the optional Premium Trekking Insurance provided by the Mount Rinjani National Park.

Even so, the park management requires every hiker to register their insurance information before beginning the trek. This procedure ensures that all visitors on the mountain have confirmed insurance coverage in case an accident or medical emergency occurs.

If you already have your own travel insurance, you only need to submit the following details during the booking or registration process:

  • Name of the insurance provider
  • Policy or certificate number

These details will be recorded together with your trekking permit as part of the official registration system for Mount Rinjani.
