Mount Rinjani Summit Adventure

Mount Rinjani Trek 3 Days 2 Nights – Sembalun to Torean Route

The 3 Days 2 Nights Mount Rinjani Trek via Sembalun to Torean is widely considered one of the most scenic and rewarding ways to experience Indonesia’s second-highest volcano. This carefully designed route allows trekkers to explore the very best of Mount Rinjani in a single adventure — from reaching the 3,726-meter summit, to relaxing beside the turquoise waters of Segara Anak Lake, and finishing with a spectacular descent through the lush and dramatic Torean Valley.

Your journey begins in Sembalun Village, located on the eastern side of the mountain. The first day takes you across wide savanna landscapes with panoramic views of the surrounding hills and valleys. As you climb higher toward the crater rim, the scenery gradually transforms, revealing breathtaking views of the vast volcanic caldera and the lake far below.

One of the highlights of this trek is the early morning summit climb, where trekkers start before dawn and reach the top of Mount Rinjani just in time to witness an unforgettable sunrise. From the summit, you’ll be rewarded with incredible views stretching across Lombok Island, the Bali Sea, and even as far as Mount Agung in Bali on clear days.

After celebrating the summit, the adventure continues with a descent to the beautiful Segara Anak Lake, located deep inside the crater. Here you can enjoy lunch by the lakeshore, explore the volcanic landscape, and soak in the nearby natural hot springs, known for their relaxing and rejuvenating mineral waters.

The final day offers a completely different experience as the trail descends through the breathtaking Torean Valley, one of the most picturesque routes on Mount Rinjani. Unlike the dry savanna of Sembalun, the Torean trail passes through lush tropical vegetation, bamboo forests, dramatic cliffside paths, and hidden waterfalls. The scenery here is incredibly diverse and peaceful, making it a perfect way to end your Rinjani adventure.

Unlike many standard summit treks that return along the same trail, the Sembalun to Torean route crosses the entire mountain, offering trekkers a much richer and more varied experience. Each day reveals a new landscape — from open savannas and volcanic ridges to crater lakes and dense jungle valleys.

This trek is ideal for adventurous travelers who want to experience the full diversity of Mount Rinjani while enjoying a balanced combination of challenge, natural beauty, and unforgettable moments in one of Indonesia’s most spectacular national parks.

Day 1 – Sembalun Village (1,060 m) → Sembalun Crater Rim (2,620 m)

Your Rinjani adventure begins in Sembalun Village, a peaceful highland valley sitting at about 1,060 meters above sea level. From here, the trail stretches across wide open savannah grasslands, offering beautiful views of the surrounding hills and farmland. Compared to the forested Senaru route, this path feels open and expansive, with fresh mountain air and endless scenery.

The first part of the trek is a steady but manageable climb along rolling grassland trails. As the day progresses, the landscape becomes more dramatic and the elevation gain more noticeable. The final section of the day is the most challenging — a steep ascent toward the Sembalun Crater Rim, where the effort is rewarded with breathtaking views over the massive Rinjani caldera, Segara Anak Lake, and the surrounding mountains.

By late afternoon, you’ll reach the Sembalun Crater Rim campsite at 2,620 meters, after gaining roughly 1,560 meters in elevation over a 9.6 km trek. As the sun begins to set, the sky often turns shades of orange and purple across the crater, creating one of the most memorable moments of the trek. After dinner prepared by your guide and porters, you can relax under a sky full of stars before resting for the summit push on Day 2.

Day 2 – Summit Push, Segara Anak Lake & Descent via Torean

Day two is the most adventurous and rewarding day of the trek. It begins long before sunrise with the summit attempt and ends deep inside the lush valleys of the Torean route. Over the course of the day you will experience Mount Rinjani’s most dramatic landscapes — from volcanic ridgelines and sweeping summit views to the peaceful shores of Segara Anak Lake and the green river valleys below.

The day starts around 2:00 AM, when your guide wakes you with a hot drink to prepare for the summit climb. After checking your headlamp and gear, you begin the ascent toward the 3,726-meter summit of Mount Rinjani. The trail climbs steadily over volcanic sand and loose gravel, making the final section challenging but incredibly rewarding.

Reaching the summit just before sunrise is an unforgettable moment. As the sun rises above the horizon, you’ll see panoramic views stretching across Lombok Island, the neighboring islands of Bali and Sumbawa, and the massive crater of Rinjani below.

After enjoying the summit and taking photos, you descend carefully back to the Sembalun Crater Rim campsite where a well-earned breakfast awaits.

Later in the morning, the journey continues down into the crater toward Segara Anak Lake, the turquoise volcanic lake resting at the heart of Mount Rinjani. The descent is steep in places but offers incredible views of the lake and surrounding cliffs.

Upon arriving at the lakeshore, you’ll have time to relax and recharge. Many trekkers enjoy soaking in the natural hot springs, known for their warm mineral water that helps soothe tired muscles. Lunch is prepared by your trekking team while you enjoy the peaceful atmosphere by the lake.

In the afternoon, the trek continues along the scenic Torean route, widely considered one of the most beautiful trails on Mount Rinjani. The path leads through dramatic ridges, tropical vegetation, river valleys, and several stunning waterfalls. Some sections of the trail are narrow and steep, so careful footing is important.

By late afternoon, you arrive at the campsite near Penimbungan Waterfall, a spectacular setting surrounded by cliffs and forest. Here your team will set up camp while dinner is prepared, giving you time to relax after a long and unforgettable day on the mountain.

After breakfast, you’ll begin the descent through the beautiful Torean Valley, one of the most scenic sections of the entire trek.

Although the distance today is shorter—around 5 km with an elevation loss of about 807 meters—the trail still requires attention. Parts of the path are narrow and steep, winding along cliffsides and through dense tropical vegetation. As you make your way down, you’ll pass dramatic landscapes filled with waterfalls, river crossings, bamboo forests, and sweeping valley views that make this route so special.

Essential Packing List for Your Trek

Preparing well for your trek is important, as conditions on the mountain can change quickly. Having the right gear will keep you comfortable, safe, and ready to enjoy the adventure. Below are the essential items we recommend bringing.

Footwear

Trekking Shoes or Boots
Wear sturdy trekking shoes or boots with good grip. Make sure they are already broken in, as the trail includes rocky paths and loose volcanic sand.

Clothing

Warm Jacket
Bring a warm jacket or down jacket. Temperatures during the night and early morning can drop to around 0–5°C, especially during the summit climb.

Thermal Base Layers
Thermal tops and bottoms are recommended for sleeping and for the early morning summit trek.

Trekking Pants
Pack at least one pair of comfortable, quick-dry trekking pants suitable for long hikes.

Lightweight Pants or Shorts
For warmer sections of the trail, lightweight pants or shorts can be more comfortable.

Moisture-Wicking T-Shirts
Quick-dry shirts help keep you comfortable while hiking during the day.

Essential Accessories

Warm Hat and Gloves
Important for staying warm during the cold summit push.

Sun Protection
Bring a sun hat, cap, or buff to protect yourself from strong sun and dusty trails.

Rain Jacket or Poncho
Weather in the mountains can change quickly, so waterproof protection is essential.

Extra Socks

Bring several pairs of moisture-wicking socks. Dry feet are key to staying comfortable and preventing blisters during the trek.

Mount Rinjani Trekking Travel Insurance

Travel Insurance for Mount Rinjani Trekkers

Before starting a trek to Mount Rinjani, it is highly recommended that all hikers have valid travel insurance. Trekking takes place in a remote mountain environment where weather conditions, altitude, and terrain can present certain risks. Having proper insurance ensures that you are protected in case of accidents or medical emergencies during your adventure.

Your insurance policy should ideally cover medical expenses, emergency rescue, and helicopter evacuation if needed. Because Mount Rinjani’s summit reaches 3,726 meters above sea level, it is important to confirm that your insurance covers trekking activities at high altitude (above 3,500 meters). Many standard travel insurance policies do not automatically include this type of coverage.

In serious situations where hikers cannot descend safely, helicopter evacuation may be required to transport the patient to the nearest hospital. For this reason, it is essential to choose an insurance plan that includes emergency air evacuation.

Mount Rinjani Insurance Update

Optional Premium Trekking Insurance

The Mount Rinjani National Park Authority has introduced a new optional program called Premium Trekking Insurance. This program is designed to improve safety and emergency response capabilities for hikers exploring Mount Rinjani.

While all trekking permits already include basic insurance coverage, the Premium Trekking Insurance provides additional protection and expanded emergency assistance for trekkers who want extra security during their hike.

This insurance option is available for both Indonesian citizens (WNI) and international visitors (WNA).

What Does the Premium Insurance Cover?

The Premium Trekking Insurance is designed to assist hikers if an accident or medical emergency occurs during the trek. Coverage includes:

  • Protection in case of trekking accidents
  • Medical treatment related to trekking incidents
  • Ground evacuation and ambulance services
  • Emergency rescue operations carried out by rescue teams
  • Helicopter evacuation with hoist support in serious situations

This additional coverage helps ensure that hikers receive professional assistance quickly in case of an emergency on the mountain.

Premium Insurance Cost

The cost of the Premium Trekking Insurance is:

IDR 290,000 per person per trekking trip

Insurance coverage begins when hikers enter the official trekking entrance gate and remains valid until they exit the national park.

The maximum coverage period is 4 days (4 × 24 hours).

Do You Need to Purchase This Insurance?

Purchasing the Premium Trekking Insurance is optional, but it is strongly recommended for hikers who do not already have suitable travel insurance.

You may want to consider purchasing the insurance if:

  • You are traveling without personal travel insurance
  • Your insurance does not include trekking or mountain activities
  • Your policy does not cover emergency evacuation
  • Your insurance does not include high-altitude trekking coverage

Because Mount Rinjani is a remote mountain with challenging terrain, having proper insurance can make a significant difference during emergencies. The Premium Trekking Insurance provides an additional layer of safety and support for hikers during their adventure.

Using Your Own Travel Insurance

Trekkers who already hold a personal travel insurance policy that includes coverage for mountain trekking activities do not need to purchase the optional Premium Trekking Insurance provided by the Mount Rinjani National Park.

Even so, the park management requires every hiker to register their insurance information before beginning the trek. This procedure ensures that all visitors on the mountain have confirmed insurance coverage in case an accident or medical emergency occurs.

If you already have your own travel insurance, you only need to submit the following details during the booking or registration process:

  • Name of the insurance provider
  • Policy or certificate number

These details will be recorded together with your trekking permit as part of the official registration system for Mount Rinjani.
