3 Days 2 Nights Mount Rinjani Trek: Senaru to Torean Route

The 3 Days 2 Nights Senaru to Torean trek is one of the most scenic and enjoyable ways to explore the natural beauty of Mount Rinjani National Park. This route offers a balanced adventure that combines breathtaking landscapes with a more relaxed trekking pace, making it ideal for travelers who want to experience Rinjani without climbing to the summit.

The journey begins in Senaru Village (601 m), the traditional gateway to Mount Rinjani. From here, the trail leads through dense tropical rainforest filled with towering trees, fresh mountain air, and the chance to spot unique wildlife such as monkeys and colorful birds.

As you climb higher, the forest gradually opens up to reveal spectacular views of the Senaru Crater Rim, where trekkers can enjoy a panoramic view of the volcano, the stunning Segara Anak Lake, and the rugged volcanic landscape that surrounds it.

The adventure continues down to the beautiful Segara Anak Lake, known for its striking turquoise color. Here, trekkers can relax by the lakeside, soak in the natural hot springs, and take in the peaceful atmosphere of the caldera.

The trek concludes with a memorable descent through the spectacular Torean Valley, often considered one of the most beautiful trekking routes on Mount Rinjani. This section features dramatic cliffs, lush green valleys, waterfalls, and unique rock formations that make the journey feel like walking through a hidden paradise.

Without the demanding summit climb, the Senaru to Torean route is perfect for nature lovers, families, and adventure seekers who want to fully experience the diverse landscapes of Mount Rinjani—from tropical rainforest and volcanic ridges to serene lakes and scenic valleys.

Day 1 – Trek from Senaru Village to Senaru Crater Rim (2,641 m)

Your adventure begins in the peaceful mountain village of Senaru, the main gateway to Mount Rinjani National Park. Today’s trek takes you through dense tropical rainforest filled with towering trees, birds, and the chance to spot the rare Lombok ebony leaf monkey. The trail is mostly shaded but steadily climbs higher throughout the day, with the final section becoming steeper and more rocky as you approach the crater rim.

07:00 AM – Registration & Trek Start
Arrive at the Senaru Trek Center to register for the trek and meet your guide and porters. After a short briefing, the hike begins along a trail that passes through local farmland before entering the lush rainforest.

09:00 AM – Rest Stop at POS 1 (915 m)
Take a short break beneath the cool forest canopy. Enjoy the fresh mountain air while your guide prepares drinking water and light snacks.

11:00 AM – Break at POS 2 (1,500 m)
Continue hiking deeper into the rainforest until reaching POS 2. This is a good place to rest, hydrate, and enjoy a quick snack before continuing the climb.

12:00 PM – Lunch at POS 3 / Mondokan Lolak (2,000 m)
Arrive at POS 3 where your porters will prepare a freshly cooked lunch. Relax for about 1–1.5 hours while enjoying fruit, hot drinks, and the peaceful jungle surroundings.

01:30 PM – Begin the Final Ascent to the Crater Rim
After lunch, the trail becomes steeper and more challenging. Tree roots, rocky paths, and narrow turns mark this final section. Your guide will set a comfortable pace with regular breaks every 30–45 minutes. As you climb higher, the air becomes cooler and the forest gradually opens to reveal glimpses of the massive Rinjani caldera.

03:30 – 04:00 PM – Arrival at Senaru Crater Rim (2,641 m)
Congratulations! You’ve reached the spectacular Plawangan Senaru Crater Rim, your campsite for the night.

From here you’ll enjoy one of the most breathtaking views on Mount Rinjani:

  • The turquoise waters of Segara Anak Lake far below
  • The active volcanic cone of Mount Baru Jari rising from the lake
  • On clear days, the distant silhouette of Mount Agung in Bali

After taking photos and enjoying the sunset, your team will prepare dinner. Spend the evening relaxing at camp and enjoy a magical night under a sky full of stars.

Day 2 — From Senaru Crater Rim to Segara Anak Lake & Propok Camp

Day two of the trek brings you deeper into the volcanic landscape of Mount Rinjani. After enjoying the sunrise from the crater rim, the journey continues with a descent to the famous Segara Anak Lake before climbing again to the peaceful campsite at Propok.

Morning at the Crater Rim

The day begins early at Plawangan Senaru Crater Rim (2,641 m). As the sun rises over the caldera, the scenery reveals one of the most breathtaking views on Mount Rinjani — the turquoise waters of Segara Anak Lake, the volcanic cone of Mount Baru Jari, and on clear days even Mount Agung in Bali on the horizon.

After breakfast and a short briefing from your guide, you’ll prepare for the descent to the lake.

Descent to Segara Anak Lake

Around 07:00 AM, the trek continues downhill toward Segara Anak Lake (2,000 m). The trail takes approximately 2.5–3 hours and is one of the more technical sections of the entire route.

The path winds down steep volcanic slopes covered with loose rocks and narrow ridges. Trekking slowly and carefully is important here, and your guide will assist you along the way. With every step lower, the massive caldera walls surround you, creating a dramatic volcanic landscape.

Relaxing at Segara Anak Lake

By around 09:30 AM, you will arrive at the lakeshore where your porters will already be preparing lunch.

This is a perfect moment to relax, take photos, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere beside the lake. The small active volcano Mount Baru Jari rises from the center of the water, making this one of the most iconic scenes on Mount Rinjani.

Natural Hot Springs Experience

After lunch, you will visit the Rinjani natural hot springs, located only a short walk from the lake.

These mineral-rich pools are a favorite stop for trekkers. Many people enjoy soaking in the warm water for 10–20 minutes, which helps soothe tired muscles after the long descent.

Trek to Propok Camp

At around 12:30 PM, the journey continues toward Propok Camp (2,300 m).

Along the way, the trail passes Goa Susu (Milk Cave), a small sacred cave known for its white mineral deposits. Your guide will briefly explain its cultural significance before the trek continues.

The route gradually climbs through rocky terrain with several narrow sections. In some places, iron ladders and fixed supports help trekkers navigate steeper parts of the trail.

Although the climb requires effort, the views become more spectacular as you gain elevation. Looking back, you’ll see Segara Anak Lake far below with the surrounding caldera forming an incredible natural amphitheater.

Arrival at Propok Camp

Around 05:00 PM, you will reach Propok Camp (2,300 m) — a quiet campsite surrounded by open hills and dramatic mountain scenery.

After arriving, you can relax with tea or coffee while your porters prepare dinner. As night falls, temperatures typically drop to around 10–12°C, and the clear mountain sky often reveals thousands of stars.

A good night’s rest here prepares you for the final day of trekking through the beautiful Torean Valley.

Day 3 — Descent Through the Torean Valley

The final day of the trek takes you down through the spectacular Torean Valley, one of the most scenic sections of Mount Rinjani. The trail winds through lush forest, bamboo groves, rivers, and waterfalls, with dramatic views of the canyon along the way. Although the route is mostly downhill, some sections are narrow and require careful footing.

Day 3 – Propok Camp (2,300 m) → Torean Valley → Torean Village (601 m)

Breakfast and lunch on the mountain

Wake up to the soft morning light illuminating the valley below. Enjoy a relaxed breakfast and a warm cup of coffee while taking in the peaceful mountain scenery surrounding Propok Camp.

07:00 AM – Start the descent to Torean Village

After breakfast, begin your journey down toward Torean Village. Today’s hike is mostly downhill but still requires energy and focus. The trail stretches for around 10 km and typically takes 6–7 hours to complete.

Leaving Propok Camp, the path gradually descends before entering the dramatic landscape of the Torean Valley, one of the most beautiful natural corridors on Mount Rinjani. Parts of the trail follow narrow ridges carved into the valley walls, locally known as “jalan kurus” or “the narrow path.” Trekkers walk carefully in single file here, and your guide will assist whenever needed to ensure a safe and comfortable descent.

As you continue lower, the environment becomes greener and more humid. The trail passes through bamboo forest, alongside flowing rivers, and near several small waterfalls. You may even walk through natural rock formations and shaded forest tunnels along the way.

One of the highlights of the descent is the breathtaking view of Penimbungan Waterfall, cascading dramatically across the canyon — a truly iconic sight of the Rinjani landscape.

11:30 AM – Lunch break by the river

Stop for a relaxing lunch beside the river, surrounded by the sounds of flowing water and birds in the forest. Your porters will prepare a warm meal, usually including fried rice or noodles, vegetables, and fresh fruit.

12:30 – 01:30 PM – Final descent to Torean Village (601 m)

After lunch, continue the final stretch of the trek. The trail follows the river through small bridges and local farmland before reaching the trailhead in Torean Village.

Essential Packing List for Your Trek

Preparing well for your trek is important, as conditions on the mountain can change quickly. Having the right gear will keep you comfortable, safe, and ready to enjoy the adventure. Below are the essential items we recommend bringing.

Footwear

Trekking Shoes or Boots
Wear sturdy trekking shoes or boots with good grip. Make sure they are already broken in, as the trail includes rocky paths and loose volcanic sand.

Clothing

Warm Jacket
Bring a warm jacket or down jacket. Temperatures during the night and early morning can drop to around 0–5°C, especially during the summit climb.

Thermal Base Layers
Thermal tops and bottoms are recommended for sleeping and for the early morning summit trek.

Trekking Pants
Pack at least one pair of comfortable, quick-dry trekking pants suitable for long hikes.

Lightweight Pants or Shorts
For warmer sections of the trail, lightweight pants or shorts can be more comfortable.

Moisture-Wicking T-Shirts
Quick-dry shirts help keep you comfortable while hiking during the day.

Essential Accessories

Warm Hat and Gloves
Important for staying warm during the cold summit push.

Sun Protection
Bring a sun hat, cap, or buff to protect yourself from strong sun and dusty trails.

Rain Jacket or Poncho
Weather in the mountains can change quickly, so waterproof protection is essential.

Extra Socks

Bring several pairs of moisture-wicking socks. Dry feet are key to staying comfortable and preventing blisters during the trek.

Mount Rinjani Trekking Travel Insurance

Travel Insurance for Mount Rinjani Trekkers

Before starting a trek to Mount Rinjani, it is highly recommended that all hikers have valid travel insurance. Trekking takes place in a remote mountain environment where weather conditions, altitude, and terrain can present certain risks. Having proper insurance ensures that you are protected in case of accidents or medical emergencies during your adventure.

Your insurance policy should ideally cover medical expenses, emergency rescue, and helicopter evacuation if needed. Because Mount Rinjani’s summit reaches 3,726 meters above sea level, it is important to confirm that your insurance covers trekking activities at high altitude (above 3,500 meters). Many standard travel insurance policies do not automatically include this type of coverage.

In serious situations where hikers cannot descend safely, helicopter evacuation may be required to transport the patient to the nearest hospital. For this reason, it is essential to choose an insurance plan that includes emergency air evacuation.

Mount Rinjani Insurance Update

Optional Premium Trekking Insurance

The Mount Rinjani National Park Authority has introduced a new optional program called Premium Trekking Insurance. This program is designed to improve safety and emergency response capabilities for hikers exploring Mount Rinjani.

While all trekking permits already include basic insurance coverage, the Premium Trekking Insurance provides additional protection and expanded emergency assistance for trekkers who want extra security during their hike.

This insurance option is available for both Indonesian citizens (WNI) and international visitors (WNA).

What Does the Premium Insurance Cover?

The Premium Trekking Insurance is designed to assist hikers if an accident or medical emergency occurs during the trek. Coverage includes:

  • Protection in case of trekking accidents
  • Medical treatment related to trekking incidents
  • Ground evacuation and ambulance services
  • Emergency rescue operations carried out by rescue teams
  • Helicopter evacuation with hoist support in serious situations

This additional coverage helps ensure that hikers receive professional assistance quickly in case of an emergency on the mountain.

Premium Insurance Cost

The cost of the Premium Trekking Insurance is:

IDR 290,000 per person per trekking trip

Insurance coverage begins when hikers enter the official trekking entrance gate and remains valid until they exit the national park.

The maximum coverage period is 4 days (4 × 24 hours).

Do You Need to Purchase This Insurance?

Purchasing the Premium Trekking Insurance is optional, but it is strongly recommended for hikers who do not already have suitable travel insurance.

You may want to consider purchasing the insurance if:

  • You are traveling without personal travel insurance
  • Your insurance does not include trekking or mountain activities
  • Your policy does not cover emergency evacuation
  • Your insurance does not include high-altitude trekking coverage

Because Mount Rinjani is a remote mountain with challenging terrain, having proper insurance can make a significant difference during emergencies. The Premium Trekking Insurance provides an additional layer of safety and support for hikers during their adventure.

Using Your Own Travel Insurance

Trekkers who already hold a personal travel insurance policy that includes coverage for mountain trekking activities do not need to purchase the optional Premium Trekking Insurance provided by the Mount Rinjani National Park.

Even so, the park management requires every hiker to register their insurance information before beginning the trek. This procedure ensures that all visitors on the mountain have confirmed insurance coverage in case an accident or medical emergency occurs.

If you already have your own travel insurance, you only need to submit the following details during the booking or registration process:

  • Name of the insurance provider
  • Policy or certificate number

These details will be recorded together with your trekking permit as part of the official registration system for Mount Rinjani.
