Mount Rinjani Second Summit Adventure

Rinjani Second Summit Trek – 2 Days 1 Night Adventure

Hiking Mount Rinjani is widely considered one of the best outdoor adventures in Indonesia. Standing at 3,726 meters above sea level, Mount Rinjani is the second-highest volcano in the country and offers some of the most spectacular landscapes in Southeast Asia. From sweeping crater views to the beautiful Segara Anak Lake and dramatic volcanic scenery, the mountain is a dream destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers.

One of the newest and most exciting routes on Mount Rinjani is the Rinjani Second Summit Trek, a challenging 2-day, 1-night journey to Mount Sangkareang, the second highest peak of the Rinjani massif at 3,126 meters. This trek is perfect for hikers who want a rewarding adventure in a shorter timeframe while still experiencing the incredible beauty of the mountain.

A New Route on Mount Rinjani

The trail to Mount Sangkareang was officially opened by Rinjani National Park in 2022, making it one of the newest trekking routes in the area. Because it is still relatively new, fewer trekkers choose this path, giving you a more peaceful and authentic mountain experience compared to the more crowded summit routes.

Trek Overview

The adventure begins from Senaru Village, where the trail leads you through lush tropical forest filled with unique plants, birds, and wildlife. The trek gradually climbs toward the Senaru Crater Rim, where you will spend the night camping while enjoying breathtaking sunset views over the crater, Segara Anak Lake, and the surrounding mountains.

Early the next morning, around 3:30 AM, you will begin the challenging climb to Mount Sangkareang (3,126 m). The hike to the summit is steep and demanding, but reaching the top in time for sunrise is an unforgettable reward. From the summit, you can witness stunning panoramic views of Mount Rinjani, Lombok Island, and even Bali on a clear day.

After enjoying the sunrise and taking photos at the summit, you will descend back to the crater rim campsite for breakfast before continuing the trek down to Senaru Village, marking the end of an incredible Rinjani adventure.

Why Choose the Second Summit Trek?

The Rinjani Second Summit 2D1N trek is ideal for adventurous travelers who want a challenging hike but may not have enough time for the longer summit programs. It offers stunning views, a quieter trail, and the chance to stand on one of the most impressive viewpoints in the Rinjani National Park.

Your adventure starts from Senaru Village, located at 601 meters above sea level. The trail immediately enters the lush tropical rainforest of Mount Rinjani National Park. This part of the trek is mostly shaded, offering protection from the sun, though the air can be warm and humid. Along the way, you may encounter wildlife such as the Lombok ebony leaf monkey and various species of tropical birds that inhabit the forest.

11:00 AM – Break at Pos 2 (Montong Satas – 1,500m)
After several hours of steady hiking, you will reach Pos 2, known as Montong Satas. Here you can relax, rehydrate, and enjoy fresh seasonal fruits and snacks prepared by the trekking team while taking in the peaceful forest surroundings.

11:30 AM – Continue Toward Pos 3
The trek continues uphill as the trail becomes slightly steeper. As you climb higher, the dense forest slowly begins to thin, allowing more sunlight and occasional glimpses of the surrounding landscape.

01:30 PM – Lunch at Pos 3 (Mondokan Lolak – 2,000m)
Arriving at Pos 3, Mondokan Lolak, you will take a longer break to enjoy a freshly prepared hot lunch. This spot is an important rest point before the final and most challenging section of the climb.

02:30 PM – Final Ascent to the Crater Rim
After lunch, the journey continues toward the crater rim. The environment gradually changes as the rainforest gives way to open grassy slopes and rocky paths. The final stretch requires a steady pace, but the stunning views along the way make the effort worthwhile.

04:30 PM – Arrival at Senaru Crater Rim (2,641m)
By late afternoon, you will arrive at the breathtaking Senaru Crater Rim campsite. While you relax and enjoy the scenery, your porters will prepare the campsite and set up the tents.

As evening approaches, witness an unforgettable sunset from the crater rim. From this incredible viewpoint you can see:

  • Mount Agung in Bali rising on the distant horizon
  • Segara Anak Lake shining far below inside the crater
  • Gunung Baru Jari, the active volcano that continues to grow within the caldera

After sunset, enjoy a warm dinner prepared by the trekking team before settling in for the night.

Essential Packing List for Your Trek

Preparing well for your trek is important, as conditions on the mountain can change quickly. Having the right gear will keep you comfortable, safe, and ready to enjoy the adventure. Below are the essential items we recommend bringing.

Footwear

Trekking Shoes or Boots
Wear sturdy trekking shoes or boots with good grip. Make sure they are already broken in, as the trail includes rocky paths and loose volcanic sand.

Clothing

Warm Jacket
Bring a warm jacket or down jacket. Temperatures during the night and early morning can drop to around 0–5°C, especially during the summit climb.

Thermal Base Layers
Thermal tops and bottoms are recommended for sleeping and for the early morning summit trek.

Trekking Pants
Pack at least one pair of comfortable, quick-dry trekking pants suitable for long hikes.

Lightweight Pants or Shorts
For warmer sections of the trail, lightweight pants or shorts can be more comfortable.

Moisture-Wicking T-Shirts
Quick-dry shirts help keep you comfortable while hiking during the day.

Essential Accessories

Warm Hat and Gloves
Important for staying warm during the cold summit push.

Sun Protection
Bring a sun hat, cap, or buff to protect yourself from strong sun and dusty trails.

Rain Jacket or Poncho
Weather in the mountains can change quickly, so waterproof protection is essential.

Extra Socks

Bring several pairs of moisture-wicking socks. Dry feet are key to staying comfortable and preventing blisters during the trek.

Mount Rinjani Trekking Travel Insurance

Travel Insurance for Mount Rinjani Trekkers

Before starting a trek to Mount Rinjani, it is highly recommended that all hikers have valid travel insurance. Trekking takes place in a remote mountain environment where weather conditions, altitude, and terrain can present certain risks. Having proper insurance ensures that you are protected in case of accidents or medical emergencies during your adventure.

Your insurance policy should ideally cover medical expenses, emergency rescue, and helicopter evacuation if needed. Because Mount Rinjani’s summit reaches 3,726 meters above sea level, it is important to confirm that your insurance covers trekking activities at high altitude (above 3,500 meters). Many standard travel insurance policies do not automatically include this type of coverage.

In serious situations where hikers cannot descend safely, helicopter evacuation may be required to transport the patient to the nearest hospital. For this reason, it is essential to choose an insurance plan that includes emergency air evacuation.

Mount Rinjani Insurance Update

Optional Premium Trekking Insurance

The Mount Rinjani National Park Authority has introduced a new optional program called Premium Trekking Insurance. This program is designed to improve safety and emergency response capabilities for hikers exploring Mount Rinjani.

While all trekking permits already include basic insurance coverage, the Premium Trekking Insurance provides additional protection and expanded emergency assistance for trekkers who want extra security during their hike.

This insurance option is available for both Indonesian citizens (WNI) and international visitors (WNA).

What Does the Premium Insurance Cover?

The Premium Trekking Insurance is designed to assist hikers if an accident or medical emergency occurs during the trek. Coverage includes:

  • Protection in case of trekking accidents
  • Medical treatment related to trekking incidents
  • Ground evacuation and ambulance services
  • Emergency rescue operations carried out by rescue teams
  • Helicopter evacuation with hoist support in serious situations

This additional coverage helps ensure that hikers receive professional assistance quickly in case of an emergency on the mountain.

Premium Insurance Cost

The cost of the Premium Trekking Insurance is:

IDR 290,000 per person per trekking trip

Insurance coverage begins when hikers enter the official trekking entrance gate and remains valid until they exit the national park.

The maximum coverage period is 4 days (4 × 24 hours).

Do You Need to Purchase This Insurance?

Purchasing the Premium Trekking Insurance is optional, but it is strongly recommended for hikers who do not already have suitable travel insurance.

You may want to consider purchasing the insurance if:

  • You are traveling without personal travel insurance
  • Your insurance does not include trekking or mountain activities
  • Your policy does not cover emergency evacuation
  • Your insurance does not include high-altitude trekking coverage

Because Mount Rinjani is a remote mountain with challenging terrain, having proper insurance can make a significant difference during emergencies. The Premium Trekking Insurance provides an additional layer of safety and support for hikers during their adventure.

Using Your Own Travel Insurance

Trekkers who already hold a personal travel insurance policy that includes coverage for mountain trekking activities do not need to purchase the optional Premium Trekking Insurance provided by the Mount Rinjani National Park.

Even so, the park management requires every hiker to register their insurance information before beginning the trek. This procedure ensures that all visitors on the mountain have confirmed insurance coverage in case an accident or medical emergency occurs.

If you already have your own travel insurance, you only need to submit the following details during the booking or registration process:

  • Name of the insurance provider
  • Policy or certificate number

These details will be recorded together with your trekking permit as part of the official registration system for Mount Rinjani.
